Being Civil in Redbridge
An Oral History Project from Redbridge Rainbow Community
ABOUT
The passing of the 1967 Sexual Offences Act, the 2004 Civil Partnership Act, and the repealing of Section 28 of the Local Government Act in 1988 were more than just parliamentary business dates for many of us - they were historical milestones which represented the beginning of the end of laws which governed how LGBT people have been able to conduct their personal lives.
We have recorded stories from local members of the LGBT community, sharing perspectives on how their lives have been shaped under changing legislation in the United Kingdom.
Although Britain has a strong understanding of equality, this has not always been the case. Until 1967 same sex sex activity was illegal and many people were imprisoned, ostracised and faced intense discrimination due to their sexual preferences.
Despite the legalisation of homosexual acts in 1967, the battle for equality continues.
The project recorded numerous stories which have now been archived in the People’s Archive, managed and maintained by Eastside Community Heritage. These stories have been preserved for future generations of Londoners, and are available to access through Eastside Community Heritage.
